Breathing – The Foundation of Movement

Why Breathing Comes First
In Pilates, breath is not background noise, but your first tool for control.
Proper breathing sets the tone for how your body stabilises, moves, and recovers. It centers your mind, anchors your posture, and connects you to your core. At Hora, it’s often the first thing we help you notice — and the last thing you take for granted.
The Role of Breath in Pilates
Breath in STOTT Pilates serves four key functions:
- Core Activation
- Breathing deeply and laterally (into the sides and back of your rib cage) activates your deep abdominal muscles — particularly the transversus abdominis, your built-in corset.
2. Movement Efficiency
- Coordinating movement with breath improves rhythm, focus, and endurance.
- Exhaling during exertion (e.g., lifting a leg or pressing into the Reformer) helps stabilize your spine and reduce strain.
3. Tension Release
- Conscious exhalation helps relax unnecessary tension in your neck, shoulders, and jaw — especially useful for those of us who unconsciously hold stress.
4. Mind-Body Connection
- Breath acts as a mindfulness anchor. Focusing on how you breathe cultivates awareness, presence, and trust in your body.

What Is Lateral Breathing?
Unlike belly breathing, Pilates emphasises posterolateral expansion — expanding the sides and back of your rib cage while keeping the abdominals gently engaged.
🫁 To try it:
Place your hands on the sides of your ribs. Inhale through your nose and feel your ribs widen sideways (like an accordion). Exhale slowly through pursed lips and feel them gently close.
How We Teach Breathing at Hora
We integrate breath into every session — not just at the start, but throughout:
- Your instructor will cue the breath during each movement (e.g., “Inhale to prepare, exhale to lift”)
- We encourage clients to listen to their breath as feedback — shallow or strained breath often signals too much tension
- Breath is especially emphasised in core work, mobility sequences, and restorative stretching
Every Breath Builds Awareness
Learning how to breathe well may sound simple, but it’s often the most transformative part of practice. Clients frequently tell us how it helps them sleep better, manage anxiety, or simply feel more present in their bodies.
